| Description:

Conservation Futures Tax (CFT) levy funds are collected from property taxes levied throughout King County and its cities for the purchase and permanent protection of open space lands. CFT funds are allocated during the King County annual budget each November, based on an application review process conducted by the King County Conservation Futures Citizens Committee in the spring. Applicants are almost always cities or King County, although a non-profit conservation group with a long term commitment to own and manage open space may apply if a government agency commits by interlocal agreement with King County to sponsor and permanently secure the property, should the conservation group later dissolve or be unable to adequately manage its property. Applicants must provide a minimum of dollar-for-dollar matching funds for all CFT funds received. Eligible projects include farm and forest lands, salmon and wildlife habitat, urban greenways, trails, and other open spaces. In 2007, approximately $10 million in CFT funds were available and 35 applications were received. Applications are submitted by April 1st and the Committee makes a recommendation to King County by July 15th for consideration in the annual budget adoption process in the fall. |
