Description: When floods are imminent, King County activates its Flood Warning Center. Operation of the center is based on a four-phase warning system, issued independently for each river. The thresholds for for each phase are based on river gages which measure the flood flow and stage (flood depth) of the major rivers in varous locations. The County monitors the gages on a 24-hour basis, so that action can be taken depending on river conditions. Beginning at phase three, flood patrol staff is deployed to monitor the conditions of rivers and flood protection facilities.
